"GET A TASTE FOR SPORT"

Aldi, the 4th largest supermarket chain in the UK, in cooperation with Team GB & ParalympicsGB, launched a nationwide* campaign to get more children into sports this summer.

The concept is simple.
A customer spends more than £30 when shopping in Aldi and their children can try out a sport for free.

Initially there wew only a few judo clubs participating in this initiative.

But once the judo community found out and got together.
Almost 50 judo clubs signed up.
Before British Judo
(the BJA) got so embarressed that they had to promote the initiative!
First by email and then on their website.

Before this, the GBJC website had promoted and shared the inititive, viewed about 850 times with 174 link clicks to the Alsi initiative website.

As of today, 14/8/2023,the amount of judo clubs listed on the Aldi map has gone from 9 to 119!

In a unique example of community power.
The Aldi Sports Initiative has increased its number of judo clubs from 9 to almost 50 club in just a few days.
Before British Judo (the BJA) decided to promote the initiative that they already knew about!

How did this come about?
A member of the GBJC group shared the initiative details expressing his dissatisfaction that British Judo had not promoted this initiative.  The judo community quickly pooled together, found resources and information and then the GBJC website hastily created a page with links and details.

The information was shared across social media platforms, among members of the community and judo clubs quickly started signing up to the initiative.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS:

  • TeamGB and Aldi discuss for months about launching the initiative.
TeamGB is part of the British Olympic Association where the British Judo Chief Executive, Andrew Scoular, is a member of the board as a NGB representative.

  • 28th June, 10:30pm –
A member of the GBJC FaceBook group has a rant in the group about the BJA not promoting the Aldi initiative.

  • 28th, 29th & 30th June.
This group’s members rally round and find all the information & links for the initiative.

  • 30th & 31st June and forward
The GBJC website adds the initiative and shares it widely across judo social media platforms.
The judo community share the information and tag in others.

  • 22 days later – 10th July.
NEST Management promotes the initiative on their website.
NEST Management being the IT contractor supplying DOJO-2 to the BJA.

……….24 days after Aldi, TeamGB and ParalympicGB launched the initiative!

  • 12th July
British Judo announces the Aldi initiative on their website and FaceBook.
Making out as if it is due to their cooperation/initiative and only for BJA affiliate clubs.
(which is not true – the initiative is open to all judo clubs).

From the initiative was launched and made public, 19th June, until the GB judo community got organised?
ONLY 9 clubs were listed on the Aldi judo club map!
Since the group got together and GBJC added it to the website and until today.

89 judo clubs have been added to the Aldo club map!

A total of 98 judo clubs are listed today!

  • The GBJC website has had about 800 views of the Aldi initiative.
  • The links on the GBJC website to the Aldi Initiative information has had 174 clicks.

Initially, a BJA club support officer, Laurence Kenyon, did share the initiative on social media but shortly afterwards deleted his post.

WHY?

Most likely he was ordered to delete his post to avoid drawing attention to the failings of British Judo Management to promote this FREE initiative to grassroots judo clubs across the country.

Did The British Judo Chief Executive know about this initiative?

BJA CEO, Andrew Scoular, is on the BOA (British Olympic Association) board and considering that TeamGB is a cooperation partner with Aldi in this initiative AND part of the BOA.

It is highly unlikely that the British Judo CEO, Andrew Scoular, didn’t know about the initiative before it was launched.

Even if he hadn’t known, he would have been notified when the initiative was launched and promoted by the TeamGB & ParalympicGB partners.

British Judo is NOT a small volunteer based operation but a multi-million pound Ltd company funded by members and the public.

It has over 40 paid employees, including:

4 x Marketing & Communication employees, headed by Lynn Madeley “Head of Partnerships”.

2 x Directors that are specialists in Marketing and Digital communications.

At the time of GBJC and the community pooling together and sharing this initiative.

Lynn Madeley and her department were at the time more focused on censoring British Judo Social Media of any mention of a public judo coach registry.
Lynn Madely has been contacted for a comment along with being informed of this initiative.

Public Judo Coach Registry – CENSORED!

You could ask the “BJA Minions” on social media why they have not promoted this initiative?
Martin Rivers, Chris Milward, Danny Harper, Nadia Minardi, Paul Ajala, etc.

But you will probably fall foul of their participation criteria that only “positive” posts and comments (about them and management) are acceptable in the groups they control!

Now British Judo management have finally shared this initiative, you can expect the minions to promote it and applaud their “great leaders”!

UPDATE - 13 July 2023

British Judo sent out an email to BJA clubs, 12th July 2023, about the Aldi initiative.

If you haven’t received it?  Check your spam folder!
If there is nothing there?
Most likely the British Judo database contains incorrect details for your club!

It is only right to report honestly and fairly on issues such as this!

Though it should be noted that British Judo do not subscribe to these practises themselves since the email forgets to mention:

The initiative was launched 24 days prior to their email!

The British Judo Chief Executive, Andrew Scoular, should have known a long time ago due to his BOA board membership.

Lynn Madeley (BJA “Head of Partnerships”) was informed of the initiative last week.

Judge for yourself how honest and “judo ethical” British Judo are when communicating with their clubs and members?

British Judo email content, 12th July 2023:

British Judo in partnership with TLC Worldwide are encouraging all affiliated clubs to sign up to the National Sports Network and play host to ALDI’s new ‘Get a Taste of Sport’ initiative.
The purpose of the National Sports Network is to provide accessibility to both children and adults to a broad range of sports throughout the UK.
Driven by its belief that ‘Every Kid Can’ the network aspires to offer sports to all social and economic backgrounds – highlighting inclusivity and diversity, whilst offering a wide choice of sports to try.
The next campaign is launching this summer with Aldi (famous for its links with Team GB and Paralympics GB) and will reach a customer base of over 40 million – many of who will be looking to try a new sport – hopefully Judo!
Being part of the National Sports Network enables you to play host to ALDI’s new ‘Get a Taste of Sport’ initiative and be included in their local directory.
For clubs who would like to host free taster sessions, the requirement is to provide one child or one adult, or both, a free trial session during times that suit you – allowing you to reach new potential members but only at times when you have the capacity. Every individual venue can set its own terms and conditions, so it fits in with your current classes/ sessions/ lessons adding bulk in participation.
Benefits to clubs include:
• A free opportunity to advertise your business in your local area and on a national scale, leading to repeat visits and increased footfall.
• Attract new members who have not participated before or who may not have been aware of you previously.
• Access a fantastic opportunity to upsell to customers during their visit.
 • No marketing cost to you!
Join today and introduce the joy of Judo to a whole new audience – and maybe even find a star of tomorrow!
